HAMPDEN PARK PUBLIC SCHOOL

NSW Department of Education

This project was carried out in collaboration with the NSW PWD and caters for the needs of approximately 600 infants and primary school children as well as providing a much needed community facility. Hampden Park Public School was awarded the Sir John Sulman award.

Alexander and Lloyd provided design input and development, documentation and assistance during construction.

The school was at the cutting edge of community education planning, the integration of the school into the local community, circulation patterns, street crossings and parks was given primary consideration during the design process. Classrooms were clustered together informally to allow for combinations of traditional and flexible teaching arrangements. A typical cluster includes four home bases, each one designed to be used individually or in combination with one or more classes. Each home base has access to a practical activities area and outdoor learning areas. Also included in the cluster is a mezzanine, teacher preparation and storage.

Unfortunately the school burnt down during the early 1990’s.
