KING'S NEW SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY BUILDING
The Council of the King’s School.
The School required a purpose built facility to achieve a more effective learning environment for the key learning area of Science & Technology. The form, orientation and finish of the new building is a direct response to the School’s Design Brief which highlighted a number of key requirements including:
- A desire for the building to incorporate ‘high tech’ imagery, fixtures and equipment that would be an expression of its use.
- A desire to incorporate Environmentally Sustainable Design principles ie. To utilise current construction & materials technology to reduce the buildings running costs.
- A need for the Science and Technology teaching area to be totally free of load bearing structure to allow flexibility in internal layout and teaching methods.
The building has two storeys. A reinforced concrete ground floor and frame supports the first floor slab from which the single span steel frame has been erected. The lower floor provides home base classrooms and amenities for Grade 3 and the upper level provides the spaces and facilities required for the teaching of the Science & Technology curriculum, and includes a Project Display Area, a Projects Classroom with adjacent store and a Computer Classroom with attached Network Base.
